Throughout his career, the graphic artist and

sculptor Eskild Beck's work has mainly been in

the universe of science fiction and surrealism.

One finds a clear fascination with outer spa-

ce and the mystery and longing that have been

awakened in humanity over time. In the 1960s and 70s, many people, due to the race to the

moon, were hit by the new wave of SF books,

movies, and series

His artistic directives come from space, from 

the chaotic, dreamy, and unknown. The uni- verse is the ultimate jumble of coincidences outside of human influence and often becomes

the starting point of his work. You might also find hints at mythology and religion, as well as the diversity of nature, which has his interests.

Eskild Beck works in several media, particularly in sculpture and on paper. An interesting method is to look at his work with watercolor/

acrylic and pen. The large drawings can start

in watercolor with large strokes and seemingly

random blobs of acidic colors. However, don`t

be fooled by the random appearance, because

there is a strict compositional idea behind it.

Against this background, the artist draws crea-

tures, spaceships, and star belts with a black

ink line. 

Whimsical doodles that turn into shapes and

then come together in the finished work to

create scenes from outer space or an unknown planet. 

There is a busyness in Beck's pictures that is reminiscent of Hanna-Barbera's space family

"The Jetsons" from the 1960s, and at the same

time, a lightness and cheerfulness that brings

to mind the novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to 

the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams to mind.

The same approach can be found in his sculptures, which consist of found objects of

all kinds mounted together into spacecrafts

and stations. He puts together odd widgets and

thingies, electronics, and stuff found in nature,
